Oh Fawn, this is beautiful, and makes me happy to think of you stepping out of that wrenching comply/resent/explode cycle that can really dominate visits “home.” Thank you for sharing this. (And thank god we’ve moved beyond Shaun Cassidy too, right?)

great post. it’s really hard (STILL!) to steer between the scylla of “argh, i’m stuck trying to please my parents and i resent it” and “argh, i’m overreacting in the OTHER direction to avoid being stuck trying to please my parents and resenting it.” very hard to set your OWN course — this is who i am and this is what i want. i know i’m still working on it, and i can see when i’m with my husband’s family that it’s a real effort for him too.
